A Pragmatist Account of Patient-Reported Mental Health Measurement

Eran Tal is Canada Research Chair in Data Ethics and Associate Professor of Philosophy at McGill University. He specializes in the philosophy of measurement, an area within philosophy of science that deals with the concepts and problems involved in designing, operating, and interpreting measurement procedures. His model-based account of measurement analyzes the inferential structure of metrological calibration and uncertainty evaluation procedures. In recent years, he has collaborated with psychometricians and health outcomes researchers as part of projects funded by CIHR, Brain Canada, CFREF, and FRQSC. He is currently developing guidelines for responsible measurement in clinical psychology and studying the ethical implications of using big data and machine learning to assess mental health risks. His work has appeared in journals including Measurement, Quality of Life Research, Philosophical Studies, British Journal for the Philosophy of Science, Studies in History and Philosophy of Science.
